Each chapter page contains all the content of that chapter.
At the very top of the page, you will see the "Book Title".
Below that are located three buttons to navigate between chapters and to the Table of Contents (TOC).
Below that you will see the "Chapter Title".
Below that you will see "Chapter Controls".
The content of the chapter is immediately after the Chapter Controls.
Chapter Navigation
The button " < " takes you to the "Previous Chapter". Left Arrow keyboard key also does the same.
The button " > " takes you to the "Next Chapter". Right Arrow keyboard key also does the same.
When the previous and next kind of buttons cannot take you any further in the direction that they are supposed to take you, they will take you to the book's table of contents page.
The " TOC " button takes you to the "Table of Contents" page of the book.
At the bottom of a chapter page, in addition to these navigation buttons, you will also find the " Top " button, which when pressed will take you to the top of the chapter page.
Chapter Controls
Chapter contents can be viewed in one or more columns. You can increase or decrease the columns to suit your viewing preference using the "Cols++" and "Cols--" buttons. This is a Site-wide setting. These same buttons are also available in site settings. If you are viewing on a device with a keyboard available, then the "+" and "-" keyboard keys implements the same controls as "Cols++" and "Cols--" buttons respectively.
A chapter can be read in one of the following three modes:
- Simple Web Page
- Single Section View
- Full Chapter View
The "View Mode: ... " button on a web page toggles between the three modes. Depending on the mode, additional control buttons are shown. The same control is also available in site settings and it is called "Default Chapter View Mode". Both these controls change the setting at the site level; not at individual chapter or individual book level.
The Chapter Controls can be hidden or shown be pressing the Escape key, or by pressing the "Show/Hide Chapter Controls (Esc)" button. This button is also available in the site settings.
Simple Web Page View Mode
When viewing a chapter in Simple Web Page View mode, you will be presented with minimal buttons to control the page view. Even these can be hidden using the "Show/Hide Chapter Controls (Esc)" button
Single Section View Mode
When viewing a chapter in Single Section View mode, only one section is shown at a time.
There are buttons to navigate to the "First", "Previous", "Next" and "Last" section in the chapter. When showing first section, the "First" and "Previous" buttons are disabled. When showing last section, the "Next" and "Last" buttons are disabled.
The "Home", "Left Arrow", "Right Arrow" and "End" keyboard keys do the same navigation.
You can navigate directly to a section of your choice by picking it from the drop-down list of section names.
If you are viewing on a narrow screen device and viewing in Single Section mode, then leave the chapter controls visible and use the section navigation buttons to navigate to previous or next sections.
If you are viewing on a device with a keyboard available and viewing in Single Section mode, then you can keep the chapter controls hidden and use the Left or Right arrow keys to navigate to previous or next section. When there are no more sections to navigate to, pressing the Left or Right arrow keys will navigate to the previous or next chapter.
Full Chapter View Mode
When viewing a chapter in Full Chapter View mode, you will be presented with buttons that allow you to choose the specific section or sections to view.
Each section has a button with its "Section Name" on it. Clicking it will either show the section or hide it.
The part of a chapter just below the chapter heading and before the first explicitly named section is placed under the section called "Chapter Intro".
The "Show/Hide Sections" button will show or hide all sections depending on their previous show or hide state.
The "Section Click = One Section" button toggles the interpretation mode of the section buttons. This is a site-wide setting.
- When "checked" and when you click a section button, only that section shows.
- When "not checked" and when you click a section button, that section is shown or hidden.
The "Multicol Sections Individually" button toggles the interpretation mode of multi-column presentation. This is a site-wide setting.
- When "checked", it presents each section in the specified number of columns.
- When "not checked", it presents the entire chapter in the specified number of columns.
Listening instead of Reading
These days web browsers either have built-in Text-To-Speech (TTS) software or there are plugins that do TTS. A TTS software can convert the text on the page and play it as speech. Some browsers may refer to it as "Read Aloud". This website is written and presented in a way that can effectively use such TTS software.
Some operating systems have excellent TTS features in their default browser. Try yours and see if that is the case. When you use the TTS feature, you will hear just the information contents of the page and the navigation and settings buttons will be silent.
